The largest grant of PLN 1 783 934 will be awarded to the project: 'Synthesis and structural/biophysical studies of model oligomers of mRNA/mt-tRNA to determine the role of modified nucleosides (m5C, hm5C, f5C, ca5C, m1G) in translation and human diseases', headed by Grażyna Leszczyńska, PhD, Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry, working at the Institute of Organic Chemistry. The project will be carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań.

Almost PLN 1.5 million (PLN 1,494,317) has been awarded to the project: "The key role of the triangle: carotenoids-retinoids-cytochromes in the development and progression of cancer", led by Professor Halina Abramczyk of the Faculty of Chemistry at the Interdepartmental Institute of Radiation Technology.

The third project will be funded by the OPUS LAP programme: 'Accurate and efficient computational methods based on the DMRG density matrix renormalisation group formalism for large molecules'. The research will be led by Professor Katarzyna Pernal from the Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematic. The funding amounts to PLN 815 570. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Professor Libor Veis of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Research tasks carried out by Polish teams will be financed by the National Science Centre, while the work of foreign teams will be financed by agencies: in the competition with the Czech Republic - the Czech Science Foundation (GACR) . Projects involving international cooperation were assessed on the basis of the Lead Agency Procedure (LAP), in which NCN acted as the lead agency. This means that all applications went through the evaluation process together with national applications within the OPUS competition and on this basis were recommended for funding.

We will publish more information about the individual projects in separate articles on the TUL website.
