Project coordinator Prof. Volodymyr Mosorov from the Institute of Applied Computer Science, TUL explains

–There are still many traditionally underestimated sources of pollution associated with the daily use of mercury-containing goods mistreated by consumers due to the lack of information on this subject, as well as the way they are disposed of.

According to the Professor, downplaying this problem can be counteracted by conducting information and educational support as well as activities creating appropriate behaviours, while using an approach that uses scientific knowledge about human decisions.

- We will build trust by creating mercury-free communities in the cities participating in the project and by engaging in multi-stakeholder dialogue to find an effective solution to issues related to mercury releases into the environment.

Why mercury? Since this element was once widely used in the production of articles that reach numerous households, on the other hand, mercury has physico-chemical properties that allow it to spread easily when it is released into soil, water, etc.

The Polish partner of the project is AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, and from abroad: two Ukrainian universities: Lviv University of Technology and Ivano-Frankivsk Academy of Jan Chrysostom and Universidade de Evora (Portugal), Universita Degli Studi di Camerino (Italy). The consortium also includes dutch technology company Virtual Angle BV - a global provider of integrated systems in the areas of technology and communication (ICT) and the Greek organization Innovation Hive - Kypseli Kainotomias information

This international consortium will build the LIFE e-HUB electronic platform connecting all partners and a special educational platform.

–First of all, a multilateral road map for a mercury-free city will be created – says Prof. Mosorov. – We are also planning to organize an international e-conference "Mercury-free city: danger in our homes", as well as a number of pro-social activities, such as the International City Marathons without Mercury, the Mercury-Free Life Academy and Summer Schools for municipalities, non-governmental organizations and educational institutions.
