The year 2023 was a remarkable one for Lodz University of Technology, marked by numerous outstanding achievements and intriguing events. Our faculty and students consistently made us proud and happy throughout the year, earning a plethora of awards and medals for their scientific and athletic accomplishments. We invite you to take a look at some of the most significant highlights of the year.

January

The new year at TUL began with a unique event. The university was visited by a cosmic graduate. This was a meeting that many people had been waiting for since the media reported at the end of November that Sławosz Uznański, PhD - a TUL graduate, had become a reserve astronaut for the European Space Agency (ESA). The auditorium where the meeting was planned was filled to the brim.

TUL is proud of the numerous sporting successes of its students. Natalia Jabrzyk, a student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering at TUL, won a silver medal in speed skating at 1500 m at the Winter Universiade held in Lake Placid. Another day of competition brought another success for our speed skaters. The women's team consisting of: Natalia Jabrzyk, Iga Wojtasik and Olga Kaczmarek won a gold medal.

We learned the final results of the evaluation of 12 scientific disciplines conducted at TUL, assessed for activities conducted in 2017 - 2021. Lodz University of Technology received as many as three A+ ratings, six A scientific categories and three B+.

February


The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity at TUL collected over 500,000 PLN. The result of the summary of all forms of money collection turned out to be a great success for the organizers and volunteers, almost 200,000 PLN more than last year.

At the Institute of Turbomachinery at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, work began on the construction of a hybrid-powered aircraft for regional transport.

A researcher from TUL proved the health benefits of coffee. Joanna Grzelczyk, PhD from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, thanks to funding from the National Science Centre (NCN), conducted research on the health-promoting ingredients of green and roasted coffee beans.

March

On the first day of the calendar spring (21.03), we learned the winners of the competition for the title of European Tree of the Year 2023. The Fabrykant oak, which grows in the Klepacz Park, on TUL campus, took first place with votes from internet users (45,718).

TUL Sports and Education Centre – Sports Bay, received the DEMES Sports Business Award for 2022 in the category "Management of a Small Sports Facility".

In March, the results of the latest edition of the QS by subject ranking, one of the most prestigious international rankings, were published. Lodz University of Technology was classified for the first time in as many as four disciplines.

A researcher from the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering – Assoc. Prof. Lucyna Bilińska received 1.5 million PLN for research on wastewater from the textile industry, she received a symbolic check during the gala of the XIII edition of the LEADER Program.

April

Assoc. Prof. Jacek Stańdo, at Center for Mathematics and Physics, was honored with the Ambassador of Innovation award by Europejski Ośrodek Rozwoju Gospodarki. The mathematician was distinguished for his outstanding commitment to numerous projects aimed at the development of innovation in Poland, as well as forward-thinking, unconventional thinking and new solutions.

The Ministry of Education and Science announced the names of the scholarship winners for significant scientific, artistic or sports achievements for the academic year 2022/2023. Seven students from TUL became Ministry of Education and Science scholarship holders. The Ministry also granted over 420,000 PLN for innovations to seven student research groups from TUL.

May

For the third time, TUL won the Polish University Championships in karate. Our karatekas once again won the general classification of the Polish University Championships, winning as many as 10 medals.

TUL handball players are the best among technical universities. At the finals of the Polish University Championships in women's handball, which ended (25-28 .05) in Opole, our players won the gold medal in the type of technical universities.

For the first time in Poland (14.05), the final of the world competition F1 in Schools Poland, under the patronage of Formula 1, took place in the TUL Sports Bay. As the organizers say, it is the largest and most exciting STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) competition in the world.

June

The Raptors team from TUL achieved success in the X Droniada. Students from the Robotics Student Research Group SKaNeR at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering went there with their drones - Hexakopter and Mavik and successfully started in six competitions.

This year we had four winners of the Engineer 4 Science (E4S) competition aimed at outstanding graduates of first-degree studies of technical universities and exact sciences.

The participation of the TUL students' representation in beach volleyball was a great success. In the final of the Polish University Championships in Warsaw, they won the title of vice-champion of Poland and at the same time took second place in the general classification of pairs.

July

The GUST team from TUL achieved a spectacular victory in the final of the International Small Wind Turbine Contest. They returned to Poland with two of the three main prizes. Their innovative wind turbine took first place, beating competing teams from Canada, the Netherlands, Egypt or Denmark.

The 10th edition of the "Eureka! DGP - we discover Polish inventions" competition was lucky for TUL. Researchers from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, under the supervision of Joanna Grzelczyk, PhD took second place.

Aleksander Skóra, a student of the Public Secondary School at TUL, won a silver medal at the 34th International Biology Olympiad in the United Arab Emirates. He is one of the best young biologists in the world.

August

Magdalena Śmiałkowska, a student of Architecture at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering at TUL, became the Polish Senior Champion in classic archery in competitions that took place in Legnica (25-27.08).

Silver medals were brought by TUL students from the Summer Universiade in Chengdu. Jan Kałusowski won silver in the 100 m breaststroke, while Mateusz Rzeźniczak stood on the podium in the 4x400m relay.

September

On September 7th, President Andrzej Duda awarded Marta Gmurek PhD, DSc, from the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering the title of Professor of Engineering and Technical Sciences in the field of Chemical Engineering. With this honor, she has become the youngest professor at TUL.

We learned the winners of the jubilee 50th edition of the Minister of Economic Development and Technology Competition in the fields of Architecture and Construction, Spatial Planning and Housing. Among the awarded were two people from TUL from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering.

October

The organizers of the European Universities Games from Lodz University of Technology were appreciated by EUSA for organizing EUG Lodz 2022.

TUL scientists were awarded at the 8th Intelligent Development Forum. Once again in Uniejów, the most important national innovators met (19-20.10) at the Intelligent Development Forum (FIR), also known as the Congress of Future Projects.

TUL became a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCU). At the University of Lodz, during the three-day conference "Universities and city reconstruction: the role of research and education", a ceremony took place (25.10) for the signing of the MCU 2020 by rectors of Polish and foreign universities.

November

A team of architects: lecturers, graduates and students of TUL, from three cooperating studios, won an international architectural and urban competition for the design concept of the Westerplatte and War 1939 Museum - a branch of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk on Westerplatte.

The XVI edition of the largest scholarship program in Poland - Young in Lodz, has ended. As the organizers informed: students of Lodz University of Technology broke the bank of Scholarships from Employers, they won 85 scholarships.

Prof. Tomasz Czyszanowski from the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics at TUL became a laureate of the National Science Centre competition OPUS 24+LAP/Weave. He will implement his innovative project on a new type of lasers together with German scientists from Technische Universität Chemnitz.

The National Science Center in the 3rd edition of the international SHENG competition for Polish-Chinese research projects, will finance a project led by Prof. Piotr Paneth from TUL on the reclamation of contaminated areas.

A unique database of medical data related to histopathology was created. At TUL (21.11), a three-year MDB - MEDICAL DATA BANK project was summarized, the result of cooperation of the university with the Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital – Research Institute. - What we have done together is of great importance. It will allow to improve therapy algorithms and be helpful in the future in saving lives - claim the project implementers, IT specialists and doctors.

December

TUL students won 4 silver medals in table tennis. The representation of the section for people with disabilities of the University Club AZS TUL presented itself fantastically during the Integration Championships of Poland AZS in table tennis, which took place in Gdansk (1-3.12.).

Unanimously, during the general assembly of the Association of Chemistry and the Environment, Prof. Małgorzata Szynkowska - Jóźwik was elected president of ACE.

Lodz University of Technology (6.12.) was visited by the Ambassador of the United States in Poland - Marek Brzeziński. He met with employees and students of IFE.

TUL is in the European training network for sustainable construction and received a grant in the HORIZON Europe programme.
