The passing year 2022 brought many unique events and spectacular successes to Lodz University of Technology. In July, the university was the main host of a major sporting event, the European Universities Games, which attracted several thousand students from over 400 universities from 37 countries.

In September, TUL launched a non-public kindergarten for the children of employees, doctoral students and students. The youngest group of the university's community - the kindergarten children - appeared on campus. Throughout the year, our researchers and students won numerous awards and medals for academic and sporting achievements.

We would like to invite you to a quick overview of the most important TUL successes and events of the 2022.

January

The year has started well for Lodz University of Technology. We have secured the first project from the new Horizon Europe programme. Our scientists will take part in the European FLEXIndustries consortium, which brings together 36 international institutions. Experts from the Institute of Turbomachinery and the K-FLEX Lodz - Uniejów company are among the members from Poland.

As many as 18 medals, 6 of them in the Open category, were won by our students at the Polish Academic Championships in swimming. The representatives of TUL gave us a lot of joy.

Anna Masek, Ph.D., professor at the Faculty of Chemistry, won the title of 'Silver Engineer 2021' in the 28th edition of the Technical Review Readers' Poll. The Silver Engineer was awarded in the materials engineering category.

February

During a gala on Polish Science Day (19.02), the TUL prize-winners of the Minister of Education and Science awards were announced. Two outstanding researchers from Lodz University of Technology were awarded: Prof. Jan Awrejcewicz for lifetime achievement and Prof. Jacek Banasiak for scientific achievements.

Traditionally, TUL played in the orchestra conducted by Jurek Owsiak. During the 30th WOŚP fundraiser TUL collected a record-breaking sum of PLN 310,000. The youngest volunteer, Wojtuś, registered at TUL, was just a few months old - he was born in July 2021.

At the 4th World Ice Swimming Championships in Głogów, two bronze medals were won by TUL students: Aleksandra Bednarek and Tomasz Józefiak were appointed to the national team.

March

TUL is proud of the many successes of the students involved in the research clubs and student associations. These activities have also been recognised by the MEiN. As part of the competition 'Students' scientific circles create innovations', it awarded almost PLN 0.5 million. As many as 8 scientific circles received funding for their projects, the highest number among all universities in Poland.

The 70th Miss World 2021 pageant, held on 16 March in Puerto Rico, will go down in history. Miss Polonia Karolina Bielawska, a management student at the Faculty of Organization and Management, won the title of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Our Olympic athlete, Kajetan Duszyński, a doctoral candidate at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School, turned out to be the best in the 400 m indoor run, thus setting his new personal record. At the Polish Senior Indoor Athletics Championships in Toruń, he achieved a time of 46.71 sec. Natalia Jabrzyk, a student at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering, won the gold medal in the women's team speed skating run at the World Academic Championships in Lake Placid (USA).

April

The results of the latest edition of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings have been published, in which TUL has been ranked among the top Polish universities.

This month, our university began the process of joining the structures of the EIT Health - European Institute of Innovation and Technology.

Researchers from the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at TUL have developed an innovative technology for obtaining graphene electrodes for water treatment. By using a new coating, they have obtained electrodes that are much more durable in use and, most importantly, much cheaper.

Information technology students won the Best Gameplay award at an international competition. Their game 'Bzzz! - Together in Power" won the Best Gameplay category of the Indie Showcase competition at the international Game Access Conference held at the end of May in Brno (Czech Republic).

EUR 1.5 million for textile research was awarded to researchers from TUL. The project "SustDesignTex" will be implemented at the Faculty of Material Technologies and Textile Design.

Lucyna Bilińska, PhD, who is affiliated with the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering, was this year's winner of the Scientist of the Future award, in the Research of the Future category. Her research work focuses on the treatment of highly contaminated industrial wastewater.

June

More than PLN 10 million has been granted to the researchers of Lodz University of Technology from the National Science Centre for the implementation of eight research projects. Most, as many as five projects will be financed from the OPUS 22 programme, two from PRELUDIUM BIS 3 and one from the SONATA 17 programme.

The President of the Republic of Poland conferred the title of professor of engineering and technology in the discipline of information and communication technology on Anna Fabijańska, Ph.D. The IT specialist received the title of professor at the age of 39 and is the youngest female professor at TUL.

TUL was the first technical university in Poland to be awarded the HR Excellence in Research distinction by the European Commission in May 2016. Now, after a thorough evaluation by EC representatives, it has been granted the right to use the label for another three years, until 17 June 2025.

July

This month was full of excitement and sporting events. Representatives of universities from 37 countries came to Lodz University of Technology to compete for a fortnight in 20 disciplines of academic sport. On 17 July, the European Universities Games - EUG 2022, of which TUL was the main host, began in Łódź.

The 'Fabrykant' oak growing in Klepacz Park, on the campus belonging to Lodz University of Technology, won the Tree of the Year competition held by Klub Gaja. It received as many as 5559 votes from Internet users.

During the final gala of the 24th edition of the Polish Product of the Future competition, the innovative circuit breaker developed at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering, which is crucial for the proper operation of protected networks, was awarded.

August

TUL has moved up in two important world rankings that highlight the university's recognition and growing reputation. In Webometrics, we were ranked 13th in Poland and 994th in the world, while URAP ranked us in 15 disciplines.

The international environmental project, coordinated by Prof Volodymyr Mosorov of the Institute of Applied Computer Science, will be carried out by several European universities. The budget for the joint tasks is close to €1.5 million.

Prof Halina Abramczyk of the Interdepartmental Institute of Radiation Technology is seeking answers to the question of what to look out for when cancer strikes. The National Science Centre (NCN) has awarded her nearly PLN 1.5 million for research into the recognition of cell signals in cancer.

September

As part of a consortium with business partners from Poland and Turkey, TUL will develop a backyard wind turbine capable of cooperation and integration with other Renewable Energy Sources. The National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) and the Turkish Council for Scientific and Technological Research have granted more than €300,000 for the research.

The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland has published its 2021 Report. TUL still ranks second in Poland, with a total of 121 granted domestic and foreign patents.

The iLumen European Solar Challenge competition in Belgium at Circuit Zolder proved once again lucky for the students of the Lodz Solar Team from TUL. During the competition, their Eagle Two car circled the track 140 times on a single charge, scoring second for distance travelled.

Each year, only one scientist receives an award for outstanding achievement in organic chemistry. This year, the Stanisław Kostanecki Medal was awarded to Prof. Łukasz Albrecht, during the 64th Congress of the Polish Chemical Society.

October

TUL has its own kindergarten. The youngest group of kindergarten children has been attending the facility for over a month. It is only now (25.10) that the time has come for the official opening and presentation of what the latest development for the children of employees, students and doctoral students looks like.

The MEiN has published information on the results of university admissions for the 2022/2023 academic year. TUL continues to be very popular with applicants. It is the 4th most frequently selected university in Poland.

TUL received the award for the best academic sport event in 2022 -the organization of the European Universities Games in Łódź. The Rector received the award at the University Sport Gala in Lublin.

November

Lodz University of Technology students will develop a plan to improve the energy efficiency of buildings in Lodz. Lodz University of Technology, the City of Lodz, the Royal Danish Embassy in Poland and the Danfoss company signed (3.11) a cooperation agreement.

A project by the academic community of Lodz University of Technology won in the district participatory budget. Submitted by staff and students, the project 'Green campus - garden on Skorupki' received 886 votes, which ensured it came first in the Stare Polesie and will be implemented in 2023.

A graduate of TUL - Sławosz Uznański, Ph.D., was among 17 astronauts selected by the European Space Agency to perform NASA lunar missions. He is in the 11-member standby group, but hopes that his skills gained at CERN, in the construction of space accelerators, will soon be used in one of the programmes.

December

A new research centre opened at TUL. It is located at the Faculty of Chemistry in the Institute of Organic Chemistry and has a long name: Research Centre for New Biologically Active Compounds Potentially Useful in Medical Diagnostics.

A TUL researcher, Prof Andrzej Bartoszewicz, has been elected president of the Lodz Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) for the next term of office, from 2023 to 2026.

The first pilot Laboratory for Active Use of Technology (PAKT) in Poland was opened at TUL. It will be a venue for organizing educational workshops for children, young people and adults, based on problem-based, project-based work and the three leading STEAM pathways: robotics, programming and multimedia.

The European scientific community has recognized a chemist from TUL Professor Małgorzata Szynkowska-Jóźwik, dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, will serve as vice-president of the Association of Chemistry and the Environment (ACE).
