The year 2021coming to its end brought many successes and unique events to Lodz University of Technology, often of a remote nature. Most competitions, open days and events were still held online. Despite pandemic restrictions, we sometimes managed to meet face-to-face at university events, which after a long period of not seeing each other made everyone very happy. Our researchers and students have won numerous awards and medals for their scientific and sporting achievements. We invite you to a quick review of the most important successes and events of Lodz University of Technology.

January:
We continued with numerous activities in the virtual world. Even the fashion show at the technical university, which is an event with a unique atmosphere, took place online this time. At the end of January, we were able to see the results of the work of design students at TUL during the diploma show - TUL FASHION SHOW 2020, the collections of 14 best students from the Fashion Design specialisation were presented.

TUL will co-develop a flow system for harvesting microalgae system. The project worth over EUR 2 million, carried out by our scientists, will provide a product thanks to which microalgae will cease to be an exclusive commodity.

In the General Secondary Schools Ranking 2021 announced by the Perspektywy Educational Foundation, the TUL Public Secondary School was once again ranked first in the Łódź Voivodeship.


February:

We learned that TUL was to have a special role in shaping the image of Poland at the EXPO 2020 World Exhibition. Design students from TUL will prepare costume designs for the staff of the Polish pavilion, and future architects will design the stands.

TUL, as one of the first universities in Poland, was awarded the prestigious title of the "University in the Microsoft Cloud". The justification says that the title is an expression of recognition by the global technology company to TUL for investing in the development of digital skills and competences of students, lecturers and administrative staff in order to ensure the highest quality of education.

The National Agency for Academic Exchange granted funding to 10 units under the "STER – Internationalisation of Doctoral Schools" programme. TUL is one of the beneficiaries, having received PLN 2.2 million.

March:

Professor Jan Awrejcewicz received an honorary doctorate from the Prydniprovsky State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (PSACEA) in Ukraine. This is the first honorary degree conferred at TUL in an online ceremony.

Last year's edition of Yapa – Yapa Home Office was awarded the Plaster Kultury prize 2020, in the "music event of the year" category. This is an exceptional honour for the organisers, as last year's edition was the first such large music event to "take place" online. This year's edition, which took place in March, was also held remotely and free of charge. Preliminary statistics show that it was watched by over 13,000 people from all over Poland.

A TUL researcher was awarded by the Society for Women in Mathematics. Dr Żywilla Fechner from the Institute of Mathematics received the 2020 Award of the Polish Society of Women in Mathematics.

The application from TUL was included in the final of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2021 competition. From hundreds of applications from all over the world, 38 projects qualified for the finals of the competition, including one from Poland developed by IT doctoral students at TUL.

In the Polish Radio "INNOVATIONS 2021" ranking, which promotes innovative projects, products and services developed by universities and companies, the second place in the best ecological solution category went to biodegradable masks from TUL.

April:

This month was filled with online events. The events held at TUL included: Virtual Open Day, 14th initiative Girls at Universities of Technology, the 16th edition of the Academic Job Fair, as well as the 12th edition of the National Seminar for Architecture Students.

The Made in Poland award was granted to TUL by the Council of the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development in recognition of the activities conducted by our university on the international arena and for the benefit of the national economy.

The Faculty of Management and Production Engineering, TUL celebrated its 30th anniversary. It is the youngest faculty at TUL. A number of events took place in a hybrid manner.

The FriML application of IT students from TUL won the Black Sea Science 2021 international student research paper competition. The application has many potential applications. It can help artists, creators and video game designers add sound to their creative work.

The GUST project from TUL won the KoKoS Competition in the Ecology category. TUL students presented a wind turbine that can provide electricity to residents with limited access to electricity.

May:

It is largely a continuation of events on the Internet. All cultural events - concerts and exhibitions - were held at TUL in this form. However, the 62nd birthday of Student Radio ŻAK had a hybrid form.

The final of the 27th edition of the national competition for the title of the Golden Engineer, organised by the Technical Review magazine, brought good news for TUL, Dr. Eng. Adam Rylski from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was the winner in the Innovation category and was awarded the title of the Silver Engineer.

The winners of the competition for the costumes for the staff of the Polish Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai were announced. They will wear clothes designed by Barbara Florczyk, a student of Fashion Design at the Faculty of Materials Technology and Textile Design at TUL.

TUL's promotion in the Round University Ranking. We advanced in all four areas evaluated in the ranking, moving up in the "education" category. In the national classification, the university was placed close to the podium, 4th place.

Professor Jan Awrejcewicz became an honorary doctor for the seventh time. This time he was honoured by the Romanian Polytechnic University of Timişoara.

The results of one of the most prestigious and important world rankings - the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects - were published. Lodz University of Technology, once again, was ranked high in two disciplines – Mechanical Engineering and Biotechnology.

June:

TUL athletes brought back a bag of medals from the Polish Academic Championships in Olympic karate. Our students were the best both in individual and team competitions. They won 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Professor Tomasz Kapitaniak became a member of Academia Europaea. This is an elite association of scientists which advises the European Commission. The professor will be a member of the physics & engineering sciences section, which currently has 437 members.

Researchers from TUL, together with the National Sugar Company, received PLN 19 million from the National Centre for Research and Development to develop an innovative process for drying pulp using waste heat and obtaining functional feed components, as part of the circular economy of sugar factories.

A doctoral student from TUL was on the list of laureates of the START - 100 programme funded by the Foundation for Polish Science. Paweł Czapski from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering joined the hundreds of the best young researchers in Poland.

In this year's ranking of universities of the Perspektywy Educational Foundation, Lodz University of Technology is once again among the best. In the group of technical universities, TUL was ranked 5th, and among academic universities it maintained its high 8th position.

Biodegradable packaging materials developed by a team led by dr hab. inż. Anna Masek, Prof. TUL from the Institute of Polymers and Dyes Technology at the Faculty of Chemistry TUL, received a distinction at the 23rd edition of the Polish Product of the Future competition.

July:

We started the holiday period with great successes of our student-athletes. Aleksandra Bednarek swam the English Channel and thus became the first Polish woman to win the Triple Crown in open water swimming - Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.

Dr Eng. Adam Rylski, from the Institute of Materials Engineering, has become President of the Lodz Council of the SNT-NOT Federation. His scientific output includes numerous patents and inventions, for which he has been repeatedly awarded at international exhibitions and competitions.

The GUST Project from TUL was awarded the second place in the International Small Wind Turbine Competition (ISWTC 2021) held in the Netherlands.

Also, the second place in Poland was awarded to TUL in the ranking published by the Polish Patent Office. We have moved up one place (from 3rd to 2nd) according to the number of patents granted, filed for protection by domestic and foreign entities.

The Institute of Organic Chemistry at TUL has received over PLN 3.9 million for a project entitled "Centre for research of new biologically active compounds potentially useful in medical diagnostics". A new research centre will be established at the university.

Kajetan Duszyński from TUL has become an Olympic champion. The winner of the gold medal of the 4x400m mixed relay at the Tokyo Olympics is a PhD student at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of TUL.

Prof. Beata Kolesińska from the Faculty of Chemistry at TUL was awarded the Innovation Ambassador prize by the European Centre for the Development of the Economy. The researcher was recognised for her scientific work and pioneering projects with application potential.

September:

The new building of the Faculty of Chemistry, "Alchemium - the magic of tomorrow's chemistry", was officially opened. This is the first stage of a larger investment, for which the university received PLN 100 million from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the first such large face-to-face meeting at the university.

The National Agency of the Erasmus+ Programme and the European Solidarity Corps awarded TUL with the EDUinspirations prize in the Digital Skills category for the international Virtual Mechatronic Laboratory project, coordinated by our university.

A team of students from the Lodz Solar Team completed 235 laps in 24 hours on the iLumen European Solar Challenge 2021 racetrack in Belgium. This is the former Formula 1 Zolder Circuit. In total, they covered 956 km on a single charge!

A virtual medical platform is being created at TUL. It is an answer to the diagnosed problem of difficult or even impossible digital access to attractive and unique medical data concerning, among others, histopathology.

A team of robotics students from the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer Control Engineering of TUL has once again achieved an international success. They took third place in the grand final of the World Robot Summit in Japan.

Researchers from Lodz University of Technology will receive €1,164,770 or more than PLN 5 million from the Erasmus + programme to develop innovative educational activities, including using virtual reality.  

This year's jubilee 5th edition of Lodz IT Days took place online. The organisers of the Lodz IT Days, in a rich five-day programme, offered among others 20 workshops and lectures. After a year's break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Festival of Science, Technology and Arts returned, but in an online format. This was the 20th jubilee edition of the Festival.


AZS TUL took fourth place in the medal classification of the 2021 Polish Academic Championships. Last year our athletes won a total of 19 medals: 9 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze.

The new vice-president of the Academy of Young Scientists of the Polish Academy of Sciences works at TUL. She is Assoc. Professor Eng. Marta Gmurek, professor at the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering.

In the 12th edition of the LIDER Programme, the National Centre for Research and Development awarded nearly PLN 3 million in research funding to two young scientists from TUL: Sylwester Pawęta, PhD, from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and Bartłomiej Cybulski, M.Sc. from the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering.

TUL has become a partner and operator of the Digital Municipality project. This is a project which provides for approximately PLN 1 billion in funding for the digitisation of offices.

The visual identification project of TUL has been recognised at an international competition in Peru. Krzysztof Guzek, PhD, from the Institute of Computer Science at TUL, was among the three highest rated by the jury.

TUL has received EUR 450,000 in funding from the Erasmus + programme to coordinate and implement two international projects: HEART and  Ready, Teady, Go!

November:

Students from SKaNeR successfully competed in Tallinn. Two robots from TUL: Ugryź and Sherlock took the first places on the podium in the Line Following Enhanced category in the international competition Robotex International 2021 in Tallinn.

Architecture graduate Estera Cłapińska, M.Sc., was awarded the main prize in the XXII edition of the competition ARCHITECTURE OF CONCRETE 2021. It is an academic award for the best thesis with the use of concrete.

Researchers from the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering of TUL together with the Robotic Medical Solutions company will develop an orthopaedic miniature arm for intraoperative measurements. The project has received over PLN 3.8 million in funding from the European Union.

The Ministry of Education and Science has published a report on the results of university recruitment for the academic year 2021/2022. The data shows that technical universities continue to be the most popular among candidates, among which TUL maintains its 4th place.

TUL and HackerU will jointly offer a training programme in Cloud Computing. This is the first such comprehensive training programme on the Polish market.

Lodz University of Technology is participating in the FRONTSH1P project with a budget of EUR 19 million and a list of consortium members including 34 institutions from Poland and Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland.

December:

TUL has become a member of a European Consortium of Innovative Universities. It is the only university from Poland to join the elite network of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU).

Prof. Jan Awrejcewicz from TUL was elected a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Its members are selected from among scholars who have distinguished themselves by their outstanding scientific achievements and authority, and who are of good repute.

Three theses from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering of TUL have been recognised in the Competition of the Minister of Development, Labour and Technology. In early December, awards were presented for the best theses, dissertations and publications in the fields of architecture and construction, planning and spatial development, and housing.

The National Science Centre has announced the results of consecutive OPUS, PRELUDIUM and MINIATURA competitions, in which scientists from TUL received funds to conduct innovative research. In OPUS alone, funding for projects amounted to over PLN 3.5 million.

Researchers from the Institute of Polymers and Dyes of TUL take part in a unique international research project to develop intelligent dressings for chronic wounds. They have received almost PLN 2.4 million from the National Science Centre for their research.
