Professor Banasiak's main area of scientific interest is the theory of differential equations. For many years he has been among the world's leading specialists in this field. He received his PhD degree in mathematics in 1989 at the University of Strathclyde in the UK. In 1992 he moved to South Africa, taking up a post at the University of Natal in Durban. In 1999 he was awarded a postdoctoral degree at the University of Warsaw. Currently, he works as a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of Lodz University of Technology and at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Mathematics is not the only passion of Professor Jacek Banasiak. He likes to escape to the mountains from time to time. He has climbed the main ridge of the Tatra Mountains and conquered the highest peaks of Africa, among others: Mount Stanley in the Ruwenzori massif and Kilimanjaro.

In my professional passion - mathematics, I am attracted to solving relatively clear intellectual problems on my own terms. I work quite slowly, at my own rhythm. I do not like racing and competition. It is similar with mountains, I do not run from the start to the finish to win, but I go and stop as I feel like it - said Prof. Banasiak in an interview about his passion.

During the Polish Science Day online gala scientists and researchers were awarded for their merits in five categories: significant achievements in research, teaching, implementation, organisational and overall achievements. The Minister of Education and Science, Przemysław Czarnek, granted 103 awards, including 86 individual and 17 team awards.
