Lodz University of Technology's Raptors team proved once again that they are more than capable of building Martian rovers and tackling tasks that might befall colonists of extraterrestrial planets. The team returned from the International Rover Challenge in Canada, which was in every way highly demanding, with the third prize.

Required to complete were five challenging missions involving a critical situation at the base caused by an explosion of the reactor. To make a long story short and uncomplicated, the rover searched the rubble from the reactor explosion, explored the area for a new settlement, had to configure the power system using components that remained after the incident, disconnect the existing pipeline and install it in a new location.

The competition went on into the night.

‘In the night Search & Rescue task, we were able to score the most points of all of the tasks in the competition. The mission was to bring back to the base a technician who had been irradiated while rebuilding a damaged reactor, and to repair and reboot the reactor. Everything was done with minimal natural light from the rover’, the students report.

The events held in rocky mountainous terrain were marred by fickle weather: heat, rain, and a sandstorm.

‘We had some tough times. We had to fix breakdowns, but we also shared the joy of each accomplishment and each challenge overcome. We were bursting with pride as we watched our Raptors Rover perform, and not infrequently, even better than we had expected’, the students who were in the Canadian Drumhelle reminisce with pride.

Adrianna Rosiak, who leads the Raptors, accepting many congratulations, made a point of emphasizing,

'The credit goes to the entire team, both those who attended the competition and those who assisted us remotely as well as those who had taken part in the preparations ahead of the competition'.
