International Research Agenda at Lodz University of Technology already has a director



Professor Alexander Steinbüchel, a world-class microbiologist, has been appointed director of the International Centre for Research on Innovative Biobased Materials (ICRI-BioM). It is embedded in the structure of Lodz University of Technology, the only International Research Agenda in our city.

 

Professor Alexander Steinbüchel was given this position by winning an international competition, which was announced, among others, in the prestigious journal "Nature" and in the international portal Euraxess - a website of the European Commission supporting the search for scientific partners, says Professor Piotr Paneth, Director for the Organization of Research at ICRI-BioM and adds, Before taking up the challenge of managing the development of our Centre, Professor Steinbüchel worked at the University of Münster and King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

 

Alexander Steinbuchel dyrektor  ICRI-BioM  w PŁProf. Alexander Steinbüchel received his doctorate at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen in 1983, where he received his postdoctoral degree (habilitation) in 1991. He completed a one-year postdoctoral internship at the University of Rokefeller in New York.

 

His scientific interests focus on molecular microbiology and biotechnology. He used the issues from these fields to explore the processes involved in the production of biodegradable PHA polymers, biosynthesis and biotechnological production of polyamides and the biodegradation of natural rubber and chemosynthetic polymers. This topic is currently continued in cooperation with the industry. Prof. Steinbüchel has numerous contacts with the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in Germany and other European countries as well as in Japan and the USA.

 

During his scientific career, he has held a number of positions, including being Dean of the Faculty of Biology at the home University of Münster. He is the editor-in-chief of two scientific journals (Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology and AMB Express) and the Microbiology Monographs book series published by Springer since 2006. The Hirsch Index of the Professor's publications is 77 and the number of citations exceeds 23 thousand.
