TUL’s Raptors conquer Spain

The Raptors team of Lodz University of Technology just returned from Spain where it took part in the European Robotic League Emergency 2019 competition. The Raptors won a special award, the Best Pilot Award, in the tournament,  and ranked second in the main competition.

This is yet another huge success for the students of the Faculty Electrical, Electronic, Computer, and Control Engineering (EEIA) in the last six months. Previously, the team won the second place in the European Rover Challenge and in the World Robot Summit in Japan.

- Our participation in the competition was part of the team’s long-term strategic development plan as regards cooperative air/ground robotic systems. Preliminary results are very promising and progress has been made. It’s important to note that during the competition, only some of the robot’s new components and subsystems were tested that are continually improved out of the limelight - Mateusz Kujawiński, a doctoral student at EEIA and the team’s development manager, said.

ERL Emergency competition promotes the idea of using robots in rescue operations, especially cooperative air and land robots. TUL’s team had four attempts to detect and recognize structural damage and to locate a missing person at a simulated emergency site. The final result was calculated as the average of the four attempts.

- The result we managed to achieve is very good considering that the team included a few new members who turned out to complete it perfectly. The conditions during a competition are much different from laboratory conditions where the team work on a regular basis. Oftentimes, you need to be really creative to solve a problem. The new team members did not let us down in this regard, either - Łukasz Kędzierski, the Raptors’ leader said.

Following a short rest break, the students are going to get ready for another competition that will be held in the United States in three months.
