TUL in the European Center of Excellence

Researchers from the Institute of Physics of Lodz University of Technology are involved in the creation of quantum simulation programs, which will be used for the development of computers capable of reaching the computing power of 1 exaflops i.e. 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 or 1x1018 operations per second!

In early October, the European Center of Excellence in Exascale Computing TREX began its activities. Part of the research will be carried out in the Institute of Physics at TUL by the Quantum Chemistry Group led by Prof. Katarzyna Pernal.

Professor Katarzyna Pernal from the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics at Lodz University of Technology talks about where the computing power will be used.

In recent years, the European Commission has become seriously involved in a challenge that also involves the United States and China. The era of the exa-scale we are entering offers unprecedented computing resources for the scientific and industrial community. This enormous computing power will allow for simulations that exceed the resources of modern machines. It will allow for highly efficient team simulations, e.g. screening a huge number of drugs for quick search for the most efficient ones.

Lodz University of Technology is one of the partners of the TREX Center of Excellence, financed under the Horizon 2020 programme. The project will last 36 months. Its total budget is 5 million euro. TREX is a consortium of 12 partners from the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Slovakia and Austria.
