Science in the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering

The latest major research projects

Research conducted at the Faculty is manifested in innovative projects that address, among others, important scientific and technological issues. Chemically degraded materials e.g. as a result of alkali – aggregate reactivity, exposure to elevated
temperatures, or physical processes such as salt crystallization and water freezing, were the subject of the Faculty's researchers' scientific investigations. Studies of the porous microstructure and a number of physical properties of porous construction materials were performed in the project 'Degradation of construction composites with microstructure caused by expansive phase formation'

'Multi-scale fractal chemo-hygro-thermo-mechanical models for analysis and prediction of durability of cement composites' is a research project where partial analysis of the internal structure and permeability of cement composites is conducted, which should allow scientists to assess durability of the material. Based on experimental studies, the Faculty's researchers are developing an algorithm and a software application for fractal geometry characterization of cement composites.

The research projects carried out at the Faculty are applied to facilitate design. The principal objective of the project 'Geometrically nonlinear dynamics of periodic beams' is to model and analyze moderately large vibrations of periodic beams. Typically, these vibrations are described with nonlinear differential equations that are very difficult to solve. The method developed at TUL makes it possible to replace them with equations with constant coefficients, which significantly reduces computation time for this type of beams and allows microstructure size effects to be taken into account.
