Science and technology that cater for the needs of the economy is one of the university’s strategic objectives. Lodz University of Technology actively participates in the economic life of the region so that it is always prepared to meet challenges brought about by the rapidly changing reality.
National and international projects
Lodz University of Technology is involved in many international research projects. Student exchange and research projects are carried out in cooperation with 450 organizations in 40 countries. The University is engaged in projects within European Community Framework Programs, which has been the biggest European mechanism of financing research. The fourth rank among technical universities and the eights among all institutions in Poland that applied for the 7th Framework Program places Lodz University of Technology among the leading science and research institutions in the country. TUL is also engaged in projects under other programs financing research , both national and international. One good example of such would be Polish-Swiss Research Program. Others include National Science Centre and National Research and Development Centre Programs.
In research, there is a special emphasis on practical application of the results of work of research teams in the form of technology transfer to industry. TUL has a great role to play here due to its multifaceted and multidisciplinary cooperation with industry. The University has been particularly focused on research in advanced material technologies, energy, environment and infrastructure, IT, production management systems, industrial biotechnology and biomedical engineering. Our researchers and scientists have been the authors of many innovative solutions and initiatives (patents, licenses, know-how) of global significance. They have presented their inventions at prestigious exhibitions and have won recognition confirmed with medals and distinctions. The number of patent applications filed and the number of patents granted places the University among the top leaders of innovation among Polish universities. There has been a growing interest among business and industry representatives in intensifying cooperation with the University and in the solutions developed at TUL. Agreements signed with global companies as well as with small and medium size enterprises are beneficial to both sides: to the University as they allow to take full advantage of the University’s potential; and to the economy by increasing its competitive edge and its growth.
Support for researchers
TUL inspires and supports academic entrepreneurship, e.g. by getting actively engaged in the set up and development of new innovative companies using University’s intellectual property (e.g. spin-off and start-up companies). Bold entrepreneurial initiatives of the TUL’s scientists bore fruit in the form of several spin-off companies enabled development of pre-incubation activities with a strong commercialization potential. The University is actively involved in the process of intellectual property management, development and commercialization of technologies, research project management, as well as in providing training for students and employees. These activities are supported by Technology Transfer Office which, in 2011, achieved certification with regard to knowledge transfer and commercialization of innovative technologies for compliance with the 9001-2008 ISO norm. In 2009, the first 100% university-owned commercial company – Technology Transfer Centre - was established at TUL to handle technology transfer and implementation to industry.

The role that the University has been playing in developing and improving network services for the citizens and academic communities of Lodz cannot be overestimated, one proof of which is LODMAN Municipal Computer Network, established and maintained by TUL. It provides other universities and research institutions with access to global academic computer networks and to services provided by them. The Computer Centre is a back-up control centre for PIONIER national academic network.
The University has completed many innovative projects. One particularly worth mentioning is the e-matura project, the purpose of which has been to develop an interactive platform, a tool to revolutionize teaching and learning methods as well as introduce new ways of verification of the mathematical skills learned. In the future, the platform could also be used in teaching and learning other subjects.
