Biographical note: professor Krzysztof Jóźwik

Krzysztof Jóźwik graduated with distinction from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Lodz University of Technology in 1987, with a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in automotive and tractor engineering. That same year he started working at the Institute of Turbomachinery  as an intern constructor. He has advanced to higher-ranking positions, first in the engineering and technical group, and since 1989 in the research and teaching group. In 1998 he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation Investigations of the piston engine turbocharger turbine under steady and unsteady feeding conditions at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, TUL. In 2006, in fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree of doktor habilitowany, he presented the monograph Mechanical heart valve with a nanocrystalline diamond layer.

 


Having been awarded the postdoctoral degree bolstered the efforts of the group of young researchers working under the guidance of dr hab. inż. Krzysztof Jóźwik. The group carried out many projects commissioned by manufacturing companies (Dresser-Rand, Faurecia, PSA Citroen & Peugeot, Eurocopter - and later Airbus Helicopters), including numerical analyses and the design of a rotor propulsion system for the world's fastest helicopter, X3. Concurrently, numerical models of blood flow were developed.

 

In 2008-2012 he was in charge of the task Development of mechanical heart valves and an air supply system for the heart aiding pneumatic chamber activator which was part of the strategic project Polish Artificial Heart. The expertise built on through his research on blood flows resulted in the monograph „Modelling of Blood Flows” published in 2013, as well as chapters in the monograph concluding the strategic project Polish Artificial Heart. In 2014, he was awarded full professorship.

 

Professor Krzysztof Jóźwik served as the vice-dean for student affairs at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 2002 to 2008, for two terms. From 2006 to 2012 he was a visiting professor at Coventry University. In 2007 he was appointed member of the board of Łódź Regional Science and Technology Park Sp. z o. o.. He held the function for 10 years. Since 2007 he has been the director of the Institute of Turbomachinery, TUL. In 2008-2012 he was the vice-rector for education. In 2009 he was appointed external examiner at Cranfield University and has continued in that role to date. Since January 2020 he acted as the vice-rector for education, and since March of the same year he has been Head of the TUL Crisis Center established in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In September 2020 he took office as Rector of Lodz University of Technology for the 2020-2024 term.

Professor Paweł Strumiłło Ph.D., D.Sc. Vice-Rector for Development
 

Biographical note: professor Paweł Strumiłło

Paweł Strumiłło graduated in 1983 from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, TUL (currently, the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering) with a Master of Science degree, with a specialization in electronic equipment. He completed his doctoral degree at the University of Strathclyde in Great Britain in 1993, where he was on the scholarship of the European Copernicus program. He was awarded a post-doctoral degree (doktor habilitowany) in the discipline of electronics in 2003, while in 2013 he was awarded full professorship.

 

 

He has worked at Lodz University of Technology since 1983, holding the following positions: technician, research associate, assistant professor, and professor. In 2005-2015 he headed the Division of Medical Electronics, whereas from 2015 he has been the director of the Institute of Electronics.  In September 2020 he was appointed vice-rector for development.  

 

 

Professor Paweł Strumiłło has published over 90 research papers and three books on the analysis of biomedical signals and images, computational intelligence, and human-computer interaction systems. His research interests in recent years have focused on electronic support systems for people with sensory impairments. On this subject, in 2013, he organized the International Conference on Auditory Display, held in Poland for the first time. Currently he is the editor of special sections "Medical Applications of Sensor Systems and Devices" in the journal Sensors and "Bioelectronics" in the journal Electronics.  

 

 

His work has been cited over 800 times (h-index of 17). He has supervised nine doctoral dissertations all which have been successfully defended.  He has been the principal investigator of 8 research grants, and in recent years, in collaboration with his colleagues, he has developed award-winning systems for people with disabilities, including assistive technology for the blind, distinguished by the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development in 2013 and implemented together with Orange Labs. 

 

 

He was a member of the management committee of the Horizon 2020-funded project to develop assistive devices for the blind (2015-2017). He is an IEEE Senior Member and a member of the Scientific Society of Łódź. Currently he is involved in the European COST program (CA 18110) and is on the Steering Committee.

Professor Łukasz Albrecht Ph.D., D.Sc. Vice-Rector for Science
 

Biographical note: professor Łukasz Albrecht

Łukasz Albrecht graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry. He completed his degree in the chemistry of biologically important compounds in 2004. His doctoral thesis, which he defended five years later, was recognized with the Award of the Prime Minister and the Sigma-Aldrich and Polish Chemical Society Award. In 2015 he was awarded his postdoctoral degree (doktor habilitowany) in chemical sciences, and four years later full professorship . He completed his postdoctoral fellowship as a fellow of the Foundation for Polish Science Kolumb program in the research group of professor Karl Anker Jørgensen at Aarhus University, Denmark.

 

 

In 2013, more than three years later, he returned to the Institute of Organic Chemistry, TUL. The grant received from NCBiR under the Lider program provided the opportunity to form a new research group to study chiral organocatalysts in asymmetric catalysis.

 

 

He has co-authored more than 90 publications in JCR journals and several book chapters (bibliometric indicators: index h= 26, his publications have been cited more than 3300 times). In 2017-2019 he served as Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, TUL, and since 2019 he has chaired the Council for Academic Degrees in the disciplines of chemical sciences, chemical engineering, food science and nutrition technology. He has been the principle investigator in 7 research grants from the National Science Centre (Opus, Sonata Bis, Sheng), Foundation for Polish Science (Homing Plus), and the National Centre for Research and Development (Lider).

 

 

Since 2019 he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Center for Molecular and Macromolecular Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Łódź. He has supervised two doctoral dissertations that have already been successfully defended and currently is supervising further six. His research activity has been recognized with many awards. He is a laureate of the Włodzimierz Kołos Scientific Award of the 3rd Chapter of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Nagroda Naukowa im. Włodzimierza Kołosa III Wydziału Polskiej Akademii Nauk), Warsaw University of Technology Medal for Early-Stage Researchers (Medal Młodego Uczonego Politechniki Warszawskiej), the Scientific Award of the Mieczysław Mąkosz Foundation for Early-Stage Researchers (Nagroda Naukowej Fundacji Wspierania Młodych Naukowców im. Mieczysława Mąkoszy) and the Award for outstanding contribution to the development of science for early-stage researchers based in the Łódzkie Voivodeship (Nagroda za wybitne osiągnięcia przyczyniające się do rozwoju nauki dla młodych uczonych pracujących na terenie województwa łódzkiego). He was awarded the scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for Outstanding Early-Stage Researchers (stypendium Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego dla Wybitnych młodych naukowców). He was also a finalist of the 14th edition of the Polityka Science Awards (Nagroda Naukowa Polityki).

 

 

The research conducted by professor Łukasz Albrecht concerns one of the most important strands of contemporary organic chemistry, i.e. asymmetric catalysis. The research deals with the synthesis and use of catalysts of strictly defined structure. His research group design, modify, and use them in the synthesis of biologically important compounds. Their findings can provide innovative tools for the preparation of new drugs, pesticides, and other organic compounds of high utility.

Associate Professor Andrzej Romanowski Ph.D., D.Sc. Vice-Rector for Education
 

Biographical note: professor Andrzej Romanowski

Andrzej Romanowski graduated in 2002 from the Faculty of Electrotechnology and Electronics (EEIA), Lodz University of Technology, with a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications with a specialization in Telecommunications and Computer Science, taught in English at the International Faculty of Engineering. Afterwards, he developed innovative services and multimedia products for the ICT industry, and at the same time began his doctoral studies. 

 

 

In 2008, he completed with distinction his doctoral studies in the discipline of Computer Science at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering, TUL. His doctoral dissertation, carried out in part as research internships at Leeds University and the University of Manchester in England, concerned the development of stochastic algorithms for processing process tomography data and was completed under the guidance of professor Dominik Sankowski. He was awarded his postdoctoral degree (doktor habilitowany) in 2019 at Częstochowa University of Technology in the discipline of technical informatics and telecommunications. His postdoctoral dissertation pertained, among others, to contextual data processing algorithms and crowdsourcing for industrial measurement data analysis. In the years 2016-2020 he served as Deputy Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of EEIA, TUL. 

 

 

Current scientific interests lie in the area of human-computer interaction in various aspects of daily life, health care, physical activity, and industrial applications. He is a co-creator of a Master degree program in Human-Computer Interaction, the only one of its kind in Central Europe. In this field, he collaborates extensively in research and education with researchers from Utrecht University, LMU Munich, Chalmers University of Technology, Harvard University, and the National University of Singapore. He has co-authored more than 100 scientific publications, has the h-index of 14, and has been recognized in many international innovation fora.

 

 

He has taken part in 13 research and development projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, NCBiR, FBW, and also with EU funds by International Atomic Energy Agency and the British EPSRC. The most recent project he is currently in charge of involves development of globally innovative software for computer forensics. For a number of years he was president and member of the Lodz Chapter of the Polish Information Processing Society as well as the Association for Computing Machinery, and ACM SIGCHI Poland Chapter. Twice, he has been the beneficiary of the scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for Outstanding Early-Stage Researchers (stypendium Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego dla Wybitnych młodych naukowców). In 2018 he was decorated with the Medal of the Commission of National Education.

 

 

Andrzej Romanowski is an advocate for student-centered education which relies on project-based, problem-solving approach and active learning methods. He is one of the pioneers of the implementation of problem-based learning and Design Thinking at TUL, as well as one of the co-authors of the currently implemented concept of flipped classroom model of education at Lodz University of Technology.

Associate Professor Witold Pawłowski Ph.D., D.Sc. Vice-Rector for Student Affairs
 

Biographical note: professor Witold Pawłowski

Witold Pawłowski graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, TUL, in 1990, whereas in 1991 he took up the post of research associate at the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering. In 1999 he earned his doctoral degree with honors and took up the position of assistant professor. In 2011Also at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, TUL, he was awarded his postdoctoral degree (doktor habilitowany). In 2016-2019 he held the position of associate professor, and in 2019 he was appointed professor of the university. In the years 2008-2012 he was the Deputy Dean for part-time and doctoral students at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

 

 

Since 2016 he has served as vice-rector for student affairs. During his tenure, he has coordinated the implementation of changes in regulatory provisions concerning students and doctoral students in the wake of the Act 2.0 - Law on Higher Education and Science coming into force. He has spearheaded the development and introduction of the new Academic Regulations at TUL.

 

 

Dr hab. inż. Witold Pawłowski's research interests concern the construction and operation of manufacturing machines, in particular the dynamics of machine tools and the machining process. A major result of his studies has been the development of a novel, original method of vibratory grinding, which was the subject of his postdoctoral dissertation.

 

 

Witold Pawłowski's research output has been published in more than 60 papers, including 12 on the list of the Journal Citation Reports, one monograph, two monograph chapters and several dozen experience reports, presentations, and papers presented at seminars, national and international conferences. He is a co-author of two patents and three patent applications. He has participated in twelve research projects, including on grinding electrospindles, tolerance diagnosis for fits in industrial robots, building Robin Heart - a Polish cardiac surgery robotic system, designing the vibratory grinding method. He has been a principal investigator in two EU grants, and currently is head of a grant under the Intelligent Development Program of the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy.

 

 

In 2007-2019 he was a member of the Division of Systems Dynamics of the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Machine Tools and Tools Scientific Society (Towarzystwo Naukowe Obrabiarek i Narzędzi) and the Control and Drives Section (Sekcja Sterowania i Napędów) of the Polish Society of Mechanical Engineers and Technicians. He is also a member of the Scientific Society of Łódź and serves on the editorial board of MECHANIK scientific technical monthly.
