History
The idea of establishing In Lodz a Polytechnic Institute arised in the middle of the XIX century.

It was the period of big prosperity of the city and the development of textile industry. The factories’ owners needed qualified engineers. The grounds and money was found to built the Institute, some buildings were hired and the status was written. Unfortunately, dispy of the efforts of the Polish Kingdom government, city council and owners of most of Lodz factories, the Russian authorities refused to establish a technical higher education institution in Lodz.

After the reestablishment of the independence in Poland the establishment of the Technical University of Lodz was a natural aspiration of a half million city. Dispy of the Parliament support for that idea, the financial means were not found in the budget.

This period of straggle of Lodz inhabitants for the Technical University ended after the liberation of Lodz. 24th May, 1945 the erection act was signed establishing the Technical University of Lodz and giving it a range of a state academic school with three faculties: Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical and a department of Textiles. In the academic year 1945/46 525 students begun their studies. University had then 33 chairs (departments). Other faculties were established with the time, the campus was enlarging, new buildings were bought and the old once were renovated.
